Peplum Style

Alice + Olivia Peplum Skirt (similar here), J.Crew Striped Peplum Top
I'll be the first to admit, I'm really late to this whole peplum thing. Yes I did purchase a peplum LBD last year but that's about it. Recently I found these two cute items that I had to have. The Alice + Olivia skirt in pink...hmm...I'm just hoping it doesn't sit in my closet forever! And below the J. Crew top which I am going to pair with my maroon jeans, Michael Kors' booties and some funky jewelry!

Vancouver Weekend

{The most amazing hot chocolate I have ever indulged in}

This weekend I was in Vancouver attending a conference for one of the boards I sit on. There was not a lot of time for sight-seeing, exploring and shopping (I have been to Vancouver a handful of times, the last time was in 2008), however I did manage to sneak in an hour here and there. One place I was determined to visit was Mink Chocolate Cafe, which has been pegged as one of the best Chocolate places in Canada. I bought several bars of chocolates including a a maple, pecan guanche. So amazing. I considered having their 'Chocolate drink' which is essentially melted chocolate in a cup but since I was about to hop on a plane  in a few hours (I didn't know how I would feel afterwards) I opted for their hot chocolate instead. It did not disappoint  Check out my other random musings from the trip:
{Couldn't buy just one bar from Mink. Unbelievable selection}

In My Closet: Blue-Blue

Yves Saint Laurent Goldtone Arty Ovale Ring in Lapis, Zara Blue Suede Shoes (similar here)

Ever since I discovered that YSL was going to discontinue making the Arty ring, I knew I had to scoop up just one more. Previously I had purchased the Cobalt a couple of years ago, but always wanted the Lapis.  Anyway, it just arrived in the mail three days ago and I have already worn it everyday since then! Lastly, I found these blue suede shoes that I purchased from Zara over a month ago in my basement. I guess I left them in there because I wasn't sure if I was going to keep them. Well, i've decided I quite like them! I think they'll be a pleasant change to all the black shoes i've been wearing lately!

Opinion: Smart or Fashionable?

{J.Crew Fall 2012 Campaign, which was my work-wear inspiration}
I consider myself to be a well rounded women- well educated, motivated, lover of sports, loyal to friends and family, political and pop-art junkie, volunteer...but I am also a crafty shopper. A lot of people (both men and women alike) have this impression of women who like to shop and dress well: That, that is all they like to do. I find this view insulting! I love to dress well and own what {I hope}many would consider nice things. And although, I love my designer brands, I am not going to go into debt because of it. I think a part of what makes me a strong, confident and content women (a part not all) is looking good which in turn makes me feel good too. The other day, my co-worker, a very sensible young guy who is a Programmer by profession said to me "I can't believe how smart and sensible you are. I thought you were one of those girls that was just into fashion when I first saw you." Okay seriously? Perhaps I should be flattered but I was fairly annoyed. Why does fashion to a lot people have to be the alternative? Why do you either have to love fashion or love humanitarian work? And why does how dowdy your outfit look have to be directly correlated to how smart you are?

In My Closet: Giving in to Skulls

{Skull bracelet found at Mendocino}

Yesterday, my cousin asked me to come shopping with her after work because she needed my advice on what to buy for her trip to L.A next month. I promised myself that this shopping trip was to help my cousin find outfits and not for me to purchase anything! With quite a few trips I need to take and gifts I must buy over the next couple of months, I have put myself on a stricter then usual budget. But then I came across this adorable skull bracelet. Since I love skulls (I have quite the collection of McQueen Scarves to prove it) and with a price tag of only $20, I just couldn't resist! I am looking forward to layering it with some of my other bracelets this weekend.

Opinion: Short Skirts At Work

{Work-appropriate skirts that are flattering & professional}

I have worked in various work environments, from a super stuffy consulting firm to a trendy boutique agency to a laid-back not-for-profit. Regardless, I have always dressed professionally and have never worn anything that could be deemed inappropriately by HR. My current position is one where we are required to dress very professionally. Most of the women here are super trendy (many look like they walked right out of a J.Crew catalog) and we also have a lot of creative-types in the company, but everyone is still adheres to the dress code. Last week as I was trekking through the building cafe, I noticed not one, not two BUT three women wearing the shortest skirts I had ever seen. I am talking mid-thigh and super tight. Some people took notice, but clearly no one spoke to them about the complete disregard for company policy. Also, company policy aside, don't you want to be perceived as professional in your work environment? I understand wanted to look and feel sexy but you have to remember you have conflicting goals to accomplish at work, which for most should be to excel in your career. How does everyone feel about this? I'm I being fair? over conservative? How short is too short?

Spotlight On: That Staple Jewelry Item

I actually love these spotlights because it not only gives me the opportunity to tell you about some of my favorite bloggers but gives me the opportunity to interact with them! I LOVE these ladies' blogs, all for different reasons but still all in the same way. Not only do I appreciate the well-thought out content found in Kat's, With Love from Kat, Becky's Life, Style, Flash and Jillian's Nova Style, but love the fact that their blogs are also clean and aesthetically pleasing. In addition, I adore their style and taste and was curious to know what they considered their staple jewelry piece and thought you might like to know too. Enjoy!

In My Closet: New From J.Crew

In my post from yesterday, I talked about my new found love for polka dots for fall 2012. Here is the J.Crew shirt I purchased. I cannot wait to pair it with my red J Brand jeans and animal print loafers from Nine West. Also pictured below is a 'purplish-blue' silk shirt from J.Crew. I am sure you all know which one. The picture doesn't do the colour justice! I cannot wait to wear the silk shirt tomorrow and the polka-dot shirt on casual Friday. Aren't J.Crew shirts just so much fun and easy to wear as well as to mix and match?

Opinion: The Fall Statement Piece

Scarves, boots, knits, we know that fall is just around the corner, but what happens when we just don't want to accept that fact that the temperatures are going to drop?
1. Burberry Brit// 2. RED Valentino// 3. alice + olivia
I have some incredibly beautiful, smart, funny and stylish women in my life, but a lot of them have one thing in common: their stubborn denial that fall is approaching and that it is going to get cold. Because of this, they often miss the opportunity to get one key statement piece for the fall: the fall jacket. They say, why spend so much money on an item that is only going to be used for a couple of months and make them feel restricted like they do it winter? But what they fail to realize, is this is an item in their closet that can make a very clear fashion statement on a daily basis. No one is going to judge you for wearing the same jacket on a daily or regular basis. It's not like wearing the same shirt, pants or dress. So, I truly believe that sometimes the most underestimated fall statement piece is the fall jacket. I personally think it's a great investment and there are so many classic options with an edge out there that can be reused for years to come. How do you feel about the fall jacket? Is this something seek out every year?

Inspiration: Lasting Players

{Balenciaga circa 1951}
Image Source: We heart Vintage
We all have our favorite designers, brands and labels. Some we cannot live without and others we cannot afford (trust me I know!) but at the end of the day, they inspire us and the way we dress. For example, the brands I cannot afford to buy a lot of, I will still try and draw inspiration form the line to find items that may make me feel the same way (please note I am absolutely not referring to kock-offs). But you get the point. The following are designers/fashion houses that have lasted almost a 100 years if not longer and have laid the foundation for thousands of designers that have followed. Their longevity and continued success is a testament to the brands innovation, quality and perseverance in an industry that can 'so easily forget'. These are some of my favorite What are yours?

In My Closet: Comfy Weekend

Lately, I have been purchasing a lot of comfort clothes like this Wilfred Free top from Aritzia. I loved it so much I decided to get the pink version as well. I also went to JCrew this weekend with the intention of buying some shirts for work. When the didn't have my size in any of my colours/styles, I decided I was not going to go home empty handed and therefore bought the Painter Boatneck Tee in Stripe, which you can purchase here. I basically wore these all long weekend with shorts, jeans and even a skirt. Just so comfy!

In My Closet: Work to Evening

Having to spend longer hours at work lately, including Friday's sometimes, it's been really important for me to put together looks that are work appropriate and can also be carried over to the evening when meeting with friends. Working downtown, it does not make sense for me to come home and change and then to head back downtown, so I really need outfits that are transitional from day to night. Here I have items purchased this year coupled with some old (but still loved) favorites!

{This lace top is perfect under a blazer for work or for an evening out with friends}
{Who would argue that these shoes don't work perfectly in any situation?}

Let's Talk: Why I Am Ready For Fall

{Their just one of my annual fall fashion inspirations}
Image Source: Beauty Delux
When it comes to personal style, I am defiantly a boots and scarf kind of girl. I love a great pair jeans tucked into a great pair of comfort boots, a cool asymmetrical jacket and a statement scarf to finish off the look. It's not that I dislike the summer, winter or spring (aka summer transitional) fashion, it's just that there is something so balanced about the fall that I am attracted to.
I think women look their best, when they feel their best. People always talk about confidence and radiance coming from within. I totally agree, but I think clothes by way of expressing ones self stylistically can contribute to that feeling for many women. And I have a feeling if you're reading a blog like this one, you may agree with this statement.
I feel my best, in the fall. I feel great in my clothes. I feel like it's the perfect temperature for my hair (lol). I love the way you can cover up with you are outdoors and then uncover when you get indoors.
I'm honestly tired of constantly waxing. I'm sick of staring at my opaque black tights and know they would look amazing under any dress or skirt and most of all I'm tired of feeling like I always have to wear brights, when they only thing I want to do is wear my beloved muted colours!
So, bring on the cute trenches, boots, leather jackets and statement scarves. I'm ready for you, fall!
What season make you feel you best?

Inspiration: A-List Minamalism

I can't quite decide if I am impressed when a celebrity, especially A-Lister is dressed well or not. I mean with all the stylists and free products at their disposal (not to mention unlimited spending accounts), is it really that impressive when they look put together and chic? Well yes and no. I still think there a some celebrities (ahem, singer of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time') that are a complete stylistic mess regardless of wealth and status.  However, I think a celebrity who can pick the right stylist and is careful about what she wears can also be impressive. And besides who am I kidding? It's always fun to see what your favorite celebrity is wearing and perhaps draw inspiration from them. However, what I find the most inspirational, is when a  celebrity  can 'edit' their look. Meaning, they don't have to wear every fashion trend of the moment under the sun, especially all at once. When a fashion-icon can pull off a simple, minimalist look, but still look stunning, well, that's what I consider impressive and it's what I draw inspiration from the most. Check out some other looks that I think fit the bill.

Coveting & Considering: Chic Comfort

As much as I like to get dressed up, I equally like to wear clothes that are comfortable. You'll never see me in baggy sweat pants, rubber flip-flops (yes I know I have something against them) or Adidas track pants, but I like to find ways to look causal and feel easy breezy without sacrificing style. I call this look Chic Comfort, not to be confused with luxe sport.

How do you dress casually? Does comfort dressing for you require certain materials or fabrics? Brands? Styles?

The T.Dot Scene: Spin

Spin, is a really cool, non-commercialized desert place. They also serve savory breakfast/brunch and lunch items. We were really excited to try this place because a few items on the menu immediately stuck out to us, as ones we must try. First was the Rolo-flavored latte (pictured below), their baked apple pie flavored ice cream and lastly, their spinach and egg crepes. We tried a couple of savory crepes, including the spinach and egg and were left feeling unsatisfied. My cousin ordered another version of the egg crepe and both were flavorless and lacked salt. After we finished our meals, we hoped that the latte and ice cream would provide us with a better experiences of the place - and it did. The Rolo-latte was rich, smooth and actually tasted like a Rolo! The ice cream actually tasted like baked apple pie. This place does refer to itself as a 'desert' place after all. Therefore, we will be visiting again soon, but just for desert!

In My Closet: Expensive & Cheap

I absolutely love mixing and matching higher end items with cheaper items. I feel like I can stretch my closet and budget a lot further when I do this.  Tonight I am going to the trendy Shops on Don Mills (outdoor mall in Toronto) with some girlfriends. We are going to have drinks and dinner on a patio. It's not super warm today, so I wanted to pick a not-to-fancy, weather appropriate outfit.

Opinion: Things I Would Never Wear

Let me start off by saying that this post is not meant to insult anyone. This is simply a personal opinion- my personal opinion. I am sure there are many things that I wear, that others would never be caught dead in. I also acknowledge that some of the items listed here, are ones that you may like or pull off very well!  However, for me, occasionally  re-evaluating and revisiting my personal style and discovering what I like/love also requires me consider things that I don't like. It's all part of the process. It's figuing out what I would not purchase (even with a hefty discount) because I know I would never end up wearing it anyway. It's about learning how I have grown as person because I think changing ones style over the years or during life altering moments, is a strong personality indicator.

Here are my list of fashion faux-pas, no-no's etc.

Crocs. I don't care how comfortable these are or if they are the equivalent to 'walking on clouds'. These shoes are so unflattering (on everyone) that they have no stylistic redeeming qualities.
Red lace. I have always considered red lace to be gaudy and harsh. Yes there are celebrities who have worn wonderful  red lace pieces,  like here ad here, but for the most part, red lace is something, in my opinion, that should be reseved for the bouduare.

Image Source: via
Rubber Flip Flops. Think Old Navy flip flops. Eek! I consider these to be the shoe equivalent of mom jeans. Often times, I see women in cute dresses/outfits then only to look down at their feet to see these overly casual,  looking footwear. I really think this should be reserved for the pool-side, if that. With so many cute, affordable and comfortable options out there, why?
Overalls. I wore overalls in the 90s. I say this as I hang my head in shame. I never felt, hot or confident in them but it was a 'trend' and besides Donna, Valerie and Kelly pulled it off so well on 90210. In the end, overalls don't do justice for any woman's figure. Besides unless your a farmer, what's the need?
Crop Tops. There is nothing remotely classy aboout crop tops. I don't care if Tom Ford himself designed and sewed the top. I am not exactly sure where crop tops are considered appropriate?
Booty Shorts.  Unless I'm an extra in a 90s rap video, I would never be caught dead in these. And since the 90s have passed (and I would never be an extra in a video), it never did, nor will it ever happen!

Image Source: College Candy
Fanny Packs. Fanny Packs. Enought said. But then again, not enough said!! Even Chanel, in my opinion can't get away with this. There is just something that just screams "I don't care about style" when I see fanny-packs. My only exception would be mountain climbing or hiking.
String bikinis.  I'm not a Brazilian model nor a porn star (I'm not comparing the two, just that in my last trip to Brazil I noticed it was quite the norm there),  therefore, you won't see me this.

NOW, I really want to know what your list would be!! Either let me know here or create a post of your own. Trust me, we are all so use to talking about what we like, so it would be nice to hear your faux-pas!.

In My Closet: Red & Jewels

Yesterday I purchased this vibrant red top from Zara. With all the pastels and neons being worn this season, I opted for a colour that is going to be huge for this fall. I typically am not a lover of red, but there was just something so pretty and delicate about this top. It was a classic with an edge, a look that I  truly love. I have tickets to the theater today, followed by dinner, therefore I am going to pair this top with a simple pair of black pants as there is already a lot going on with the neckline.
